Spreeblick

I just love the guys at Panic, they seem to be one of the nicest, friendliest and coolest Mac software companies around and they gave us the best Mac OS X ftp client, Transmit (and after all, Steven Frank, one of Panic’s founders, still writes code for the Newton).

But I must say that I am pretty unimpressed by their latest code child that is wonderfully named Stattoo.

Stattoo puts information like the local weather, your new mails or your hard drive usage onto your desktop (it „tattoos“ it there). Which is nice. But pretty useless if I can’t even click the latest mail subject in Stattoo to open it in mail.app, for example. Also, there’s very few ways to modify the display of my stattoos (size, for example, would be a nice feature since all stattoos don’t fit my screen width and as far as I can tell Stattoo doesn’t use dynamic scaling like the Dock does).

So for now I need to say that the amazing Konfabulator does a much better job at keeping information on your desktop because it is highly configurable and you can move the little thingies they call widgets wherever you want them (in Stattoo, they’re stuck in a row). Also, Konfabulator has a large developer crowd by now so your choices of widgets are endless.

But I know the guys at Panic aren’t dumb. This might be just the start for Stattoo and they might have something up their sleeves. For now, I won’t use Stattoo, but who knows…

Seit wann heißt es eigentlich selbst bei Wohnungssuchenden im Westen „Raum“ statt „Zimmer“ (“Kreuzberger Mutter mit Anhang sucht 2-Raumwohung“)?

Soweit ich mich erinnere, hieß es im Westen immer „2-Zimmerwohnung“ (außer natürlich, die Wohnung hatte mehr oder weniger als zwei Zimmer…) und im Osten „2-Raumwohnung“ (außer natürlich…).

Is’ ja nicht schlimm, ich frag ja nur. Und beobachte die Verschmelzung der Sprachdetails mit Interesse und Freude.

Aber „2-Raumwohnung“ klingt so ostig.

Zur Auflockerung mal wieder ein paar Snapshots aus meiner Umgebung. Die Fotos wurden mit dem Sony Clié TH-55 gemacht, den ich hier jetzt nicht noch einmal verlinke. Aus reiner Faulheit und weil man zu Sony nun wirklich nicht dauernd linken muss.

A pretty neat little app that appears in your menu bar (on Mac OS X, of course) is BluePhoneMenu. There’s some little bugs left and the app is under development, but for now it is quite handy (haha) to see who’s calling right on your screen and to be able to check the battery status without having to look at the phone.

We’re getting another step forward to your mobile phone being just a hub for your communication needs. Combine a bluetooth headset, Apple’s Address Book SMS functions and BluePhoneMenu and your phone can stay in your jacket.

Unless you need to charge it, of course.

Today’s release of iTunes 4.5 with some cool new features brought me to a new blog called Mac Move.

Mac Move’s author Mike Fletcher writes about a web site making use of the iTunes song rating feature which I, too, found pretty useless up to now. The system, build by students of the University of Illinois, uses your personal song ratings on your computer to recommend new songs to you. It’s supposed to work pretty good but I still need to try it. I’ll let you know.

Another site called movielens has a similar approach to - you guessed it - movies.

Btw, I am pretty sure that the new iTunes video features (check the store for music videos and movie trailers, yes, even from germany) point to a very close iPod update. I expect to see a video iPod that connects directly to your TV set to show your movies and pictures this summer.

And of course, I’m still hoping for a new Apple PDA, at least as cool and good as this.

Posting to your weblog using a web browser is pretty cool (specially if you use MovableType with its very well designed interface), but for some postings a small and quick desktop app just makes more sense.

Though I like the interface of ecto, the problems ecto is having with text encoding (see this article by ecto’s author) are really annoying, specially if you consider that other desktop blog apps don’t seem to have the same problem.

Thanks once again to Tim for pointing out to me that NetNewsWire doesn’t only allow you to read RSS feeds but to post to your blog, too. Somehow I missed out on this all the while using NNW, maybe because it isn’t advertized as a main feature.

So I’m writing this in NNW.

wenn ich in meinen musikerzeiten einen text geschrieben habe, war dieser immer die reflektion meiner umgebung. manchmal habe ich wissentlich bei anderen künstlern geklaut, manchmal unbewusst. manchmal war ich der überzeugung, dass ich dieses stück musik, diesen text komplett neu erfunden habe, nur um viel später festzustellen, dass das nicht der Fall war.

My tree arrived today!

Though it might look like a paper urn on first sight, it’s in fact the packaging of my Joe Strummer memorial tree certificate. It arrived only a week after I’d bought it online and includes a cool Strummer-style note and a map of where my tree (and all the others) resides, in case I want to hug it one day.

You gotta love the man even more for ideas like that. After having thought about how much pollution his and other band’s constant touring is responsible for, Strummer decided to plant as many trees as it takes to make up for it. And of course, he couldn’t help but tell the rest of the world about the idea.

Planting a tree is always a good idea, I thought. Specially if it is in memory of the greatest singer ever.

Gar nicht schlecht: The Clash’s London Calling im Remix, und dazu noch kostenfrei! Fair und auch richtig ist es allerdings, wenn man sich ein Stück Rebellenwald kauft, bevor man die Songs lädt (was man tun sollte, bevor irgend jemand auf die Idee kommt, die Aktion wegen Copyrightverletzungen zu stoppen).

Und bevor die Frage kommt: Ja, ich hab’ jetzt ein Stückchen von Strummers Garten.

Reviews der Songs werden an dieser Stelle folgen, die meisten sind tatsächlich recht spannend.

Edit: Gerade kam ein Comment rein, der auch auf die Songs hinweist und auf einen BoingBoing Artikel dazu.

Ich frage mich als alter Twin Peaks Fan nur, warum das Ding nicht verdammtguterkaffee heißt. Die Domain ist noch frei.

Wie man sehen kann, versuche ich bereits seit einigen Jahren mehr oder weniger erfolgreich (meist eher weniger), meinen Blog zu etablieren. Oder heißt es mein Blog? Der Weblog? Das Weblog? Moment: DIE Website. DIE Homepage. DIE Log-Datei. Hm. Ich finde, DER Blog klingt ok. So ok, wie dieses ganze Denglisch eben klingen kann (und obwohl mich das nervt, tendiere ich trotzdem zum reinen Englisch. Denn schlimmer als DER BLOG klingt DAS ELEKTRONISCHE TAGEBUCH).

Mal abgesehen von den üblichen Zeitproblemen bei diesem Blog aber stellen sich mir auch inhaltliche, um die es in diesem Artikel gehen soll.

der ccc ruft zum berechtigten boykott auf und argumentiert völlig korrekt.

es ist ganz einfach: eine industrie, die sich jahrzehntelang durch die einführung eines neuen mediums (die cd) und damit steigende verkaufszahlen sand in die augen gestreut hat und sich hinsichtlich der eigenen zukunft faul zurückgelehnt hat, wird von den technischen entwicklungen eingeholt. obwohl es viele menschen gab, die für ein früheres handeln plädiert haben. nun steht der konsument vor dem einzigartigen problem, dass er zwar einen service bekommt (schnelle weltweite verfügbarkeit von musikdaten sowie wunderbare tauschbörsen), jedoch keine möglichkeit hat, für diesen service zu bezahlen. und wer ist daran schuld? der konsument selbst, so möchte es uns herr gebhardt glauben machen.

If anyone cares, he or she will have noticed that SPREEBLICK hasn’t been updated for a long time. For any working person over the age of 28 it is easy to see why that is (after all, blogs are hugely popular amongst young people - they’ve got enough time!).

I am still in the process of burying my former company DEFCOM which went bancrupt after a very nasty and stressful story (namely a client who thought it is very clever to not pay for our work). At the same time, I am starting a new business, trying to get some free time for the family, preparing two new projects and so on. The time left for other passions like writing, playing and… well you know… is not enough.

It’ll get better. Then again, I thought so last year.

Imagine - for now - SPREEBLICK as one of your best friends. When they finally call, don’t complain about them not having called for so long. Instead, be happy that they called after all.
